The Up-the-Sleeve songs

Songs that move my heart enough that they need to be shared with others. I just happened to write some of them.

Of You

My first love song...i think.

My heart feels black as night
from overcoming
Coming to my senses
All too late

And you still haunt me
you're a ghost i cannot shake
though years go by
they cant erase the pain

of you
of you

I have no idea
why these words pour forth
maybe something in my past
is unresolved

But there's no denying
That i'm deep in love now
And there's no ghost that can
ever change the fact

of you
of you

Let Justice
(updated 1-23-04)

The main focus of this song was taken from Amos 5, and was largely written a long time ago, but i wrote the bridge last weekend.

She has fallen, and will not rise again
The virgin Israel
She lies neglected on her own land
There is none to raise her up

Let justice roll down like living waters
And righteousness flow as a stream
Let my people come and cleanse their hands
That they might be free, indeed

You who turn justice into bitterness
And throw righteousness to the ground
You have stolen the work of her hands
And the bread from her mouth

A voice is crying in the wilderness
"Come near and bow down to the ground"
Come and repent of your great sin
Turn from that way that brings you death

But the church has grown complacent behind their wall of stone
And it's time for us, time to make a change
We've got to wake up and

Let justice roll down like living waters
and righteousness flow as a stream
Let my people come and cleanse their hands
That they might be free, indeed

I Am

"I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins."-Isaiah 43:25

I didnt write these words, they were written long ago by the pen of the prophet Isaiah, through the Inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Fear not, O Israel,
For I have redeemed you
I have called you by name
You are Mine

The water and the flame
will not overwhelm you
For I, I will hold you
In My hands

For I am the LORD your God
The Holy One of Israel,
For I am the LORD your God
The Holy One of Israel,
Your Savior

Because you are precious
In My eyes
I would trade the nations
for you

I'll round up all your
scattered children
pull them in from east and west
north and south

For I am the LORD your God
The Holy One of Israel,
For I am the LORD your God
The Holy One of Israel,
Your Savior

Run

This is a song that i've been riding pretty much since summer. If you've been to new city since then and heard me play, then you know this song, and it needs no introduction. But if you havent, this is a song about the grace of God, and how it doesnt stop being the grace of God when you reject it.

My sin is great and heavy
as Uriah's wife lies next to me
My heart is tired from fighting you so long
when i remember the blood you shed for me

And i run,
and i fall on my knees
and who am i to take up this love that you give?
Cause i still run

You call us to be your imitators
and to live a life of love as your sons
But many times we fall short of your standard
But when we're empty, we get up and come again

And we run,
and fall on our knees
And who are we to take up this love that you give?
Cause we still run

You died on the cross of suffering and shame
to cover over every sin
When you rose on that third day
It was love and it was joy you gave

And you run,
and you fall on your knees
And who are we to take up this love you give?
Because you run,
And you fall on your knees
Lord, who am i to take up this love you give?
Cause i still run
